How much is Vail Resorts going to invest in Afton Alps this summer?

Vail Resorts to Invest Nearly $10 Million in Enhancing the Experience at Afton Alps and Offers Minnesota Skiers and Riders Access to Nine Ski Resorts on the Popular Epic Season Pass for the 2013-2014 Winter Season

BROOMFIELD, Colo., March 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- With Vail Resorts' recent acquisition of Afton Alps, Minnesota skiers and snowboarders can already look forward to next winter as the Company invests nearly $10 million in significant enhancements to the ski and ride experience and offers the greatest resort access and value in the snow sports industry on one season pass, the Epic Pass.

As part of Vail Resorts' commitment to providing the experience of a lifetime to all of its guests, the Company plans to invest nearly $10 million in enhancements and upgrades to Afton Alps this summer to dramatically improve the guest experience next winter. Vail Resorts intends to significantly improve snowmaking to open the ski resort earlier, extend the season and provide a more consistent and high-quality snow surface; create state-of-the-art terrain parks with extensive new features and rope tows; energize and modernize the base area facilities; and add Vail Resorts' signature EpicMix and EpicMix Racing technology to personalize the guest experience.

Vail Resorts also is bringing its popular season pass products, the Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass, to Minnesota skiers and riders and offering access to Afton Alps as well as eight iconic resorts in the West--Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin in Colorado and Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in Lake Tahoe. Even better, kids can ski and ride Afton Alps and these eight western resorts for $5 less than 2012-2013 Afton Alps Child Pass. Adults can ski or ride all nine resorts for $529, just $130 more than a current Afton Alps Pass. Purchasing next season's pass now through April 14 guarantees the lowest price and offers skiers and riders the option of making a $49 down payment now with the remainder due in the fall.

"We're thrilled that Afton Alps is now a part of our family of resorts. It's a very special place steeped in snow sports tradition and we intend to honor that legacy by bringing additional enhancements to the ski area and creating more value for Minnesota skiers and riders in their season pass choices. Next winter, they'll be able to ski as much as they want in their own backyard and at eight world-class resorts out West with the Epic Pass," said Kirsten Lynch, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Vail Resorts. "Vail Resorts' season passes offer guests the flexibility to choose which pass is right for them based on how much and where they plan to ski and ride. We encourage all of our guests to purchase their passes this spring to take advantage of the lowest guaranteed price for next winter."

The following guide can help Minnesota skiers and snowboarders choose the best season pass options for them, based on how much they plan to ski and ride locally and out West. All passes are available for purchase at www.epicpass.com.

VAIL RESORTS TO ACQUIRE AFTON ALPS - LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE CONTINUES UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP
AFTON ALPS, MINN.—Dec. 6, 2012—Today the Augustine family announced that Afton Alps has entered an agreement to be purchased by Vail Resorts, Inc., the leading mountain resort operator in North America.

Vail Resorts plans to upgrade and enhance the experience at Afton Alps and create opportunities to connect the ski area’s guests to its seven world-class resorts in Colorado and Lake Tahoe through season pass and other lift ticket products.
“The Augustine Family and the great team of employees at Afton Alps are thrilled to join Vail Resorts, giving Afton Alps a promising new future while preserving the ski area’s legacy that has made it a premier ski area in the Midwest today,” said Amy Reents, an owner of Afton Alps and manager of resort marketing and community relations.
Afton Alps was founded in 1963 when three local Minnesota farmers—Paul and Robert Augustine and Tom Furlong—realized their dream to build a ski area. Decades of hard work, dedication and passion made Afton Alps a leader in the ski industry. Today, nearly 50 years later, Afton Alps is the largest ski area near a major city in the Midwest with 48 trails on nearly 300 acres, 18 lifts, four base areas, night skiing and riding, tubing and an 18-hole golf course.
“What a wonderful gift these three men gave to their families, to our employees and guests, and to our local community. We’re grateful to them for the legacy they built and, at the same time, excited to enter a new chapter in Afton Alps’ history. Afton Alps will continue to be our hometown hill," Reents added.
The acquisition by Vail Resorts is expected to be completed within the next month; closing is subject to certain conditions.

Vail Resorts plans to connect Afton Alps guests to its seven world-class resorts through season pass and other lift ticket products. The company also intends to enhance Afton Alps with redesigned and updated terrain parks, best-in-class coaching and instruction for all levels of skiers and riders, dedicated racing programs, expanded dining and entertainment options, and integrated technology programs like EpicMix, EpicMix Photo and EpicMix Racing.

Afton Alps season pass holders will immediately receive a 25-percent discount off of the (Full Day) window rate on lift tickets at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood.

What is Summerizing?

How to keep your ski gear in good shape during the summer months

  1. Reasons to summer wax:  applying wax to the base and edges keeps the bases from drying out and the edges from rusting during the summer months, when humidity can wreck havoc with your equipment.
  2. Bring your ski equipment inside your house.  A climate controlled house will keep your equipment from rusting.  If you leave it in your garage humidity and oxidation will attack your metal edges and cause rust to any exposed edge.
  3. When finding a spot for your equipment make sure it is out of sunlight.  Sunlight can fade your equipment causing discoloration.
  4.  Keep boots buckled during the summer, this allows the plastic to stay formed for re buckling.
  5. Cutting a fabric softener in half and placing both halves in boots. Helps to fight odors over summer, and scare off mice.
